5.4.4 Flame pyrolysis of metals
Objective:
Flame pyrolysis generates a silicate-containing layer on the substrate surface.
Suitability:
Flame pyrolysis is in principle suitable for all uncoated metals.
Procedure:
- Prior to flame pyrolysis the surface must always be thoroughly cleaned and degreased.
- Prior to flame pyrolysis the surface is blasted with corundum.
- Flame pyrolysis is also suitable for larger areas.
- An active flame containing the coating substance is passed across the substrate surface.
- After coating, a primer (adhesion promoter) suitable for the coating and adhesive is applied to the surface.
Points to heed:
- Before undertaking flame pyrolysis, clean the substrates and blast them with corundum
- Maintain the correct distance between the active flame and the substrate surface
- Observe the specified treatment duration; then apply a suitable primer
