Option to enlarge the bonding area in the event of tensile forces

When sizing the bonding area it must be ensured that this is adequately large. For more complex structures, a test joint (usually lap shear specimens) can give initial information and this can be augmented by calculations.

Contrary to common belief, simply enlarging the bonding area when there are shear sresses is not favourable, because the strength of the bonded joint decreases with increasing overlap length. Further information can be obtained from the literature or an external adviser.
