5.7.1 Priming of glass
Objective:
The primer primarily promotes adhesion between the substrate surface and the adhesive, namely it acts as an adapter between the surface and adhesive.
Suitability:
Priming is in principle suitable for all types of glass. It must be ensured that the primer is suitable for both the substrate and the adhesive.
Procedure:
- The substrate surfaces must always be thoroughly cleaned and degreased; if necessary other surface treatment processes must be carried out
- Apply the primer evenly in a thin layer using a sponge, following the instructions of the manufacturer (thick layers weaken the adhesive bond)
- It must be ensured that the primer is suitable for both the substrate material/surface and the adhesive
- Heed the airing time (evaporation time); then apply the adhesive within the oopen time
Points to heed:
- The substrate surfaces must always be thoroughly cleaned and degreased and if necessary other surface treatment processes must be carried out
- Mix the primer before use
- Apply a thin, even layer
- Heed the airing time
- Heed the open time
- Close the container immediately after removing primer
- Note the date of opening on the container
- Primers must be used within a limited time after the first opening of the container
